Fascinated by technology

Before entering journalism in 1908 and becoming the staff illustrator for The Autocar magazine, he began his career as a technical draughtsman in the design department of The Daimler Motor Company in Coventry. The layout of the factory floor, with its tall glass walls and heavy steel framework overhead, is based on the British factory buildings where he himself once walked among the machinery. He was fascinated by how thousands of individual mechanical parts came together through human collaboration to form a working automobile.
