Westport as a source of inspiration

The ice cream parlor depicted in the artwork is located in Westport, Connecticut. Stevan Dohanos lived and worked there for much of his life. Like his fellow illustrators, he almost always drew on his immediate surroundings, local residents, and Westport shops as models and inspiration for his covers for The Saturday Evening Post.
