Etching on paper
Louis Justin Laurent Icart was a prolific French painter, graphic artist and illustrator greatly influenced by the French masters of the 18th century, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Edgar Degas and Claude Monet to name but a few. He depicted life in Paris and New York in the 1920s and 1930s and had a particular passion for (sensual) women in his art. He is considered to be one of France’s most prominent Art Deco artists.
After distribution, this piece commonly became known as “The Gatsby” in art and collector circles. The elegant lady reclining in her automobile is reminiscent of Daisy and the affluent lifestyle of Long Island and New York during 1922 in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary masterpiece “The Great Gatsby”.
