From young nobleman to racing talent

Carel Godin de Beaufort, born in 1934, was the scion of a noble family that expected him to choose a distinguished career in diplomacy or business. But Carel followed a different path. In the 1950s he discovered his true passion: motor racing. With a Porsche 356 he had bought with his own hands, he began his career despite limited resources. He became one of the few self-made drivers who bought, maintained, and drove their own car, which quickly earned him a reputation as determined and talented.

Breakthrough with the orange Porsche 718

His breakthrough came with the bright orange Porsche 718, which would become a trademark of his career. Despite going up against teams with huge budgets, he managed to stand out time and again. The Porsche 718 was not only fast, but also a symbol of Carel's boldness and technical knowledge. Opponents were impressed by his driving skills and his daring style on the track. He raced in Formula 1 against the biggest names, yet with limited resources he still managed to compete and often surprise.

The dangers of motorsport

Carels love of speed, however, came with risks. In an era when safety was still a secondary concern in motorsport, he drove without fear and with enormous dedication. His passion pushed him to ever greater heights, but also to the most dangerous circuits. Fate struck in 1964 during practice for the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nurburgring. Carel was involved in a serious accident and later succumbed to his injuries. His death was a major blow to motorsport, which lost one of its most unique figures.
