12e Salon De L’Automobile Et Du Cycle 1910
Gaston Simoes de Fonesca was a Franco - Brazilian painter, illustrator and lithographer. He was born in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, but settled in Paris with his parents at a very young age. De Fonesca was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. Later in Greece together with Émile Bourguet and the French School of Athens he created reproductions for the Louvre Museum. During his life he exhibited at the Galerie Barreiro, the Salon des Tuileries, Salon d’Automne and the Musée National d’Art Moderne. De Fonesca has created an atmospheric rendering of the 12th Salon de L’Automobile et du Cycle. We see a wide array of automobiles and their chauffeurs and well to do passengers hoarding the festively lit streets in front of the Grand Palais. Crowning the Grand Palais is a beacon that lights the skyline. The setting would suggest that a festive event is afoot and that anyone and everyone is here to celebrate the automobile.
