Bountiful
ca 1910
Bountiful by the artist Fielyen, is an ode to agricultural America and the automobile. The automobile enabled urban America to reach out into the country and in turn agricultural America could sell and move their produce to the cities more rapidly and efficiently. Quite literally the automobile became a bridge between the cities and the countryside. In this painting from ca 1905 we see a ride to the countryside in an automobile from the city that not only presents entertainment for the day but also provides fresh farm produce for urban households. Bountiful clearly describes the scene where there is produce in abundance, a multitude of urban and country people and an idyllic country setting where the automobile is clearly a welcome and novel visitor.
