Evening Drive in Blue
ca 1900
Evening Drive in Blue is the setting for a drive by, at considerable speed, of the Grand Palais in Paris. The artist is unknown, the automobile is rather non-descript in its rendering, even the identity of the couple in the car is left to the imagination. However, the detail and distinctive quality of the building in the background is quite clear, as well as the time of day. The darkness of evening is translated into the colour blue and a top the Grand Palais a beacon lights the skyline. The artist is taking us on a night time drive in fashionable Paris to celebrate the Grand Palais itself. The Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées is a large exhibition hall that was built for the 13th World Exhibition held in Paris in 1900. The World Exhibition celebrated all that had been achieved in the past century and promoted technological and social development in the next century. The Grand Palais has an imposing neoclassical facade with Art Nouveau wrought ironwork and is located on the Avenue Winston Churchill in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
