French Automobile No. 9

French Automobile Nr. 9

Gouache on paper De Bruyne, also known as Dexter Brown, is a British painter who studied at the Harrow School of Art. He has two painterly personas: first, De Bruyne, an impressionist painter (best known in America) who confines himself to the golden era of motorsport up to the Second World War. Second, Dexter Brown, the almost photographic to abstract artist (best known in England) who focuses on the early days of motorsport through to the present. As an artist he is known for his paintings of celebrities and racing cars, with commissions from companies such as Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, Rolls-Royce and British Leyland. De Bruynes impressionist depiction of an automobile (number 9) racing down the road at high speed is intensified by a French flag and an ecstatic goddess who seems to protect and guide the automobile during its rapid progress. We may assume that the automobile is of French origin. The outstanding use of color and the technique of letting the automobile flow into another form are characteristic of De Bruynes dynamic art.
