German Automobile Nr. 24

Gouache on paper De Bruyne, also known as Dexter Brown, is a British painter who studied at the Harrow School of Art. He has two painterly personas: first, De Bruyne, an impressionist painter (best known in America) who focuses on the golden age of motorsport up to the Second World War. Second, Dexter Brown, the almost photographic to abstract artist (best known in England) who concentrates on the early days of motorsport through to the present day. As an artist he is known for his paintings of celebrities and racing cars, with commissions from companies such as Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, Rolls-Royce and British Leyland. De Bruyne's impressionist depiction of an automobile (number 24) racing down the road at high speed is intensified by a road in the colors of the German Imperial flag and an admiring goddess who seems to protect and guide the automobile during its rapid progress. We may assume that the automobile is of German origin. The outstanding use of color and the technique of letting the automobile flow into another form are characteristic of De Bruyne's dynamic art.
