Piel Brothers Brewery

The oleograph is a Piel Brothers Brewery advertisement depicting people in a touring car consulting with Native Americans in the desert. The artist’s signature is on the left and belongs to John Hampton, a painter and illustrator. Piel Bros. East New York (E.N.Y.) Brewery (1883 - 1975), was one of the prominent German American brands that once made New York City the brewing capital of America. The brewery was founded by the brothers Gottfried, Michael and Wilhelm Piel. Oleographs are designed to resemble oil paintings by using a range of 15-20 colours and a stamping process used to imitate a canvas surface with thick strokes of oil paint. The print is then attached to canvas to further enhance the look of an oil painting.
