He then studied in 1871 at the Academie Julian in Paris under Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger and completed his studies at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. At the beginning of his career he practiced history painting, symbolism and later orientalism. He also made a name for himself as an illustrator and poster designer and was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1892. In 1894 he met Marie Leblon in Algeria, whom he married in 1896.
