Snell American Cycles

Snell American Cycles

ca. 1897

France

Lithograph on paper Eugene Oge was a French poster artist, illustrator and caricaturist. He began as a pupil of Charles Verneau and in his spare time he studied at the Academie Julian, where he developed an admiration for Jules Cheret. In 1890 he opened his own studio, first under Verneau and later under Pierre Vercasso. Oges craftsmanship is clearly visible in his ability to convey his message using simple color combinations. Here we see his advertisement for the Snell American Cycle (bicycle). American bicycle brands flooded the European market in 1896, and Europeans still had to get used to this new means of transport. The French coachman somewhat lazily studies his energetic American counterpart on his bicycle. Printing house Charles Verneau, 114 Rue Oberkampf, Paris
