The Car & the Dog

The Car & the Dog

Onbekend

An early automobile is racing at a considerable speed. The wheels are in motion and the dust is flying up from the ground. The lady in the automobile is holding onto her hat, her scarf is flying behind her. Her posture is leaning backwards and the expression on her face reveals her surprise as to the speed at which the automobile is driving. A dog even has to run to keep up with the automobile. The gentleman, however, seems quite at ease behind the tiller of his automobile. The first car was patented by Karl Benz in 1886, when transport was dominated by the horse drawn carriage. Coachmen were trained to steer using reins, pulling them from left to right to steer the horses. This technique was continued in the automobile, by which a simple tiller steered the front wheels of the automobile.
