Benz Mylord Victoria

Benz Mylord Victoria

The quality of Karl Benzs automobiles is clearly evident from this car: even though it is over 120 years old, it is still in beautiful condition.

In its day, the two cylinder Mylord is seen as a very luxurious model, with its leather top, leather mudguards and dos a dos seating layout (backrests against each other). The story goes that in 1893 Karl Benz calls his first four wheeled car model Victoria to celebrate his victory over a problem with the steering system. His solution is to equip the system with two pivot points, something for which he immediately applies for a patent. However, it is more likely that the car is named after the Victoria, a term for a particular type of carriage. Nevertheless, it is the first time that a car is given a real model name. In 1897 Benz introduces the so called Kontra motor, a two cylinder engine with cylinders positioned opposite each other. This engine type, which later becomes known as the boxer, is more powerful and runs more smoothly. This Mylord is also fitted with such an engine. Karl Benz, who does not like fashionable changes, refuses to adapt the design of his cars to modern times, even though sales figures are declining.
