Bugatti Type 43

Bugatti Type 43

Although the longer touring bodywork does not immediately suggest it, the Bugatti 43 is directly derived from the Type 35 Grand Prix racer.

Although the longer touring bodywork does not immediately suggest it, the Bugatti Type 43 is directly derived from the Type 35 Grand Prix racer. The car is even fitted with the same engine: a 2.3 liter eight cylinder with supercharger. Each cylinder has three valves – two intake valves and one exhaust valve – and the engine has so much torque that the car can pull away from a standstill in fourth gear. At the time, the Bugatti Type 43 is the first production car that can reach 160 kilometers per hour. The light alloy wheels with eight spokes show its kinship with the racing Bugattis. An interesting detail on this particular example is that the headlights turn with the steering wheel. The Type 35 is the most successful Bugatti racing car. The model makes its debut at the Grand Prix of Lyon in 1924. After that, the car finishes second in the Grand Prix of San Sebastian and begins its winning streak with various Grand Prix victories and five consecutive wins in the Targa Florio in Sicily. Bugatti is one of the few manufacturers that also offers its racing cars for sale to private customers. The Type 35 is very popular with private drivers and could be regarded as the first series produced racing car. That is also why this type can claim more than a thousand victories.
