Fine Art on Wheels

From 4 July to 31 August 2025, the Louwman Museum was the setting for an exhibition where art and motorsport came together: Fine Art on Wheels. Eight iconic BMW Art Cars, designed by world-famous artists, were displayed in The Great Hall. They were not just art objects — several models also competed in races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
BMW 3.0 CSL (1975) - Alexander Calder
The very first Art Car, known for its vibrant color blocks and bold shapes.
BMW 3.0 CSL (1976) - Frank Stella
A graphic artwork with precision as its starting point: a technical grid as the bodywork.
BMW 320i Group 5 (1977) - Roy Lichtenstein
Pop art on wheels, with dots and lines that evoke speed and motion.
BMW M1 Group 4 (1979) - Andy Warhol
Hand painted at breakneck speed; the brushwork radiates pure energy. Raced at Le Mans in 1979.
BMW 730i (1990) - Cesar Manrique
Organic lines and vibrant colors inspired by nature and his homeland Lanzarote.
BMW 525i (1991) - Esther Mahlangu
With traditional Ndebele patterns, she was the first female artist to bring color and culture to the project.
BMW M3 GT2 (2010) - Jeff Koons
An explosion of color and speed, designed to capture the adrenaline of a race. Drove Le Mans in 2010.
BMW 850CSi (1995) - David Hockney
A visual look inside the car: Hockney even painted the interior on the outside.
In the Great Hall
All eight cars could be seen in real life. In the large, light space of The Great Hall, the designs were shown to their best advantage. This unique combination of art and motorsport could be admired at the Louwman Museum until 31 August 2025. Open seven days a week.
