Auto Polo
Oil on canvas In 1902, Joshua Crane, a car enthusiast in Boston, started auto polo, a remarkable and dangerous game. At first, the polo player himself drove the "motor polo," but driving and playing turned out to be too much to ask of one person. Around 1904, a second participant was allowed to take a seat in the car. Many competitions were held along the American East Coast, but numerous accidents and injuries led to auto polo being banned in 1924.
