Eat My Dust!
The race is afoot and the red speed devil in the front is leaving its competitor behind in a cloud of dust. We can almost hear the driver say “Eat my dust!” as he races past. The driver and passenger in the red car are both leaning forward and focusing on the road ahead, dust is billowing behind them and their wheels are spinning all suggesting that they are racing at a considerable speed. This artwork could possibly be attributable to Ernest Montaut (1878 - 1909), a French poster artist who was credited with the invention of various artistic techniques such as speed lines (motion lines) and distorting perspective to create the impression of speed. Montaut could easily be considered the father of motor speed.
