Grandma's First Ride

Grandma's First Ride

Oil on canvas John Newton Howitt was born in White Plains, New York. He studied at the Art Students League of New York and, shortly after the First World War, was a member of the Society of Illustrators and the League of New York Artists. In this work, Howitt captures the tension and excitement of an older woman taking her first ride in a car. Note how the vibrancy of modern life is expressed in the colors of the painting, which clearly contrast with the darker tones of the older woman and the past.
