Kinsey Whiskey & Horseless Carriage
1944
Herbert Bohnert was an American (portrait) painter, illustrator and teacher who studied at the Cleveland School of Art. He was a contemporary of Norman Rockwell, and like Rockwell his illustrative style was naturalistic and focused on facial expression, costume and setting to convey character. Bohnert pursued a successful career as an advertising illustrator in New York and he was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Salmagundi Art Club and the Artists Guild. Bohnert’s artwork of a 1892 horseless carriage (with a puncture) was used for an advertising campaign for Kinsey Blended Whiskey. The advertisement states that “The Gift of Enjoyment is really The Gift of the Gay Nineties. For example, the automobile and light whiskey. Both date from the dashing decade and both add to better living today”. In other words Kinsey Blended Whiskey is as important as the automobile for a better life - quite the statement!
