The Shock Absorber Haubourdin

L’Amortisseur Haubourdin

Lithograph on paper Jean Leon Henri Gouweloos was a Belgian painter, poster artist and lithographer. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and was a pupil of Albert Charle and Jean Portaels. Gouweloos had a passion for painting landscapes, maritime art and portraits of seductive women. Here Gouweloos shows us a female harlequin as she admires the Haubourdin shock absorbers of a French automobile. The quality of the shock absorbers is emphasized by the precarious posture of the harlequin, who continues to sit while the car drives over railway tracks.
