The Driver

Le Chauffeur

Lithograph on paper Le Chauffeur is a caricature of a driver with expressive eyes, a mustache that flows into a fur coat, a blue cap with an insignia and brown leather gloves. He also wears dust goggles and everything points to a driver who defies the open air at speed. The artist is Paul Baronie. Edmond-Honore 'Ed' Sagot (1857–1917) was the first dealer in contemporary art in Paris to specialize in prints and posters. In 1881 he opened an artistic bookshop which from 1884 developed its activities in the direction of the print trade. Sagot sold drawings, etchings and lithographs and in 1891 published the world's first catalogue of posters illustrated by modern and contemporary artists. He was one of the pioneers and Parisian leaders of this new art form, and under his guidance 'poster mania' made its entrance. The Sagot-Le Garrec Gallery still exists and is one of the oldest art galleries in Paris. Published by Ed Sagot, Paris
