Luis Fontès and Johnny Hindmarsh-karikatuur
Luis Goncalves Fontes (1912-1940) Luis Fontes father was Brazilian and his mother British. In 1933 he inherited a considerable fortune. Because of his thick glasses he did not exactly look like a racing driver, but once behind the wheel he revealed himself as a competitive driver. He was also notorious for his after-parties. His greatest victory was the win at Le Mans in 1935 together with test pilot John Hindmarsh. He was killed in 1940 as a pilot in a Wellington bomber. Johnny Hindmarsh (1907-1938) Johnny Hindmarsh was both a racing driver and a pilot. As a driver he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1935 in a 4 1/2 litre Lagonda M45R Rapide together with Luis Fontes. Hindmarsh was killed in an air crash at Brooklands in 1938. This series of caricatures was created by Frederick Gordon Crosby in 1935. The drivers depicted were famous among British motorsport enthusiasts at the time, especially for their performances on the Brooklands banked circuit and at major events on the continent.
