Rochet Motorcycle

Motocyclette Rochet

ca. 1898

France

Lithograph on paper Philippe Chapellier was a French impressionist, modern artist, caricaturist and illustrator. He was known for his advertising posters for department stores, automobiles and (motor)bikes. His focus was often on feminine beauty. In 1900 he opened his own lithographic studio. In this poster we see a stylistic and characterful advertisement for a Rochet light motorcycle (produced by Societe Industrielle DAlbert, Somme from 1902 to 1927). Here we feel the dynamism of the fox hunt, normally led by riders on horseback. But now we see the riders only in the background while the Rochet light motorcycle takes the lead of the cheerful pack of dogs chasing the foxes. Artistic Posters P.
