Nr. 8 & Nr. 10
Carlo Demand was a German artist who attended the prestigious Staedel Academy of Arts in Frankfurt and was known to work for 10 to 14 hours a day. He had a special interest in machinery and made commercial art and illustrations for book covers, magazines and newspapers. Demand also published several books, the most popular being “Conquerors of the Air - The Evolution of Aircraft, 1903 - 1945” and “The Big Race” 1955. Demand was a founding member of the Automobile Fine Arts Society and routinely exhibited at Pebble Beach. He is one of the best documented automotive artists ever and he provided illustrations for Daimler Benz, Volkswagen, Ford, Renault and Volvo. The gouache depicts a race between nr. 8 (a Daimler Benz) and nr. 10 and it seems that nr. 10 is in the lead.
