Tempera on canvas This painting was commissioned by the Curtis Publishing Company, founded in 1891, once one of the largest and most influential publishers in the United States. Times changed in 1899 and the automobile (from the Greek autos meaning self and the Latin mobilis meaning movable) made its entrance into society, but this did not happen without a struggle.
