The Spare Tyre

The Spare Tyre

Little is known about the artist V.Frise. Here we see his charcoal rendering of a blown tyre and the salvation by the spare tyre that will save the day. The gentleman is hard at work trying to replace the punctured tyre, whilst the lady is casually leaning against the fence as she waits for him to complete the task. Is it quite clearly a summer’s day, hence the light attire of the two individuals, and the lady in question does not seem to mind the wait. There is very little attention for the identity of the automobile itself as the focus is quite clearly on the activity of the individuals. Charcoal is made from twigs of willow or vine that have been heated at a high temperature in an enclosed vessel without oxygen. This process yields a solid dark grey to black drawing stick. Charcoal is easy to work with, creates textural effects, and is prized for its ability to create light and shadow.
