Alfa Romeo 8c 2300 Le Mans Touring
Due to a lack of money, Alfa Romeo pulled out of racing in 1933 – according to Alfa’s own account, the brand had already proven itself enough. The racing department was handed over to former works driver Enzo Ferrari, who founded his own team, the 'Scuderia Ferrari'.
With this car designed by Touring, the legendary driver from Monaco Louis Chiron takes part in Le Mans in 1933 for the Scuderia. The regulations for participating touring cars stipulate that they must be fitted with a windscreen, mudguards, a silencer, lights, a horn and four seats. Naturally, everything has been made as simple as possible to save weight. The rear seats, for example, are virtually nothing more than a token gesture. The car weighs just over 1,000 kilograms. Also note the fin at the rear, a first step towards streamlining for racing cars. The 2.3 liter eight cylinder engine presented by Alfa Romeo in 1931 in fact consists of two four cylinder blocks placed one behind the other, with an ingenious gear system between them that drives both the camshafts and the supercharger. For this Le Mans version, the engine capacity has been increased to 2.6 liters.
