According to the story, Ferruccio Lamborghini, a tractor manufacturer, complained during a chance meeting with Enzo Ferrari about various defects in the Ferrari he had recently purchased, whereupon Enzo told him he should stick to building tractors. At least as stubborn and headstrong, Lamborghini then decided to start his own car factory and compete with Ferrari. The first prototype, the 350 GTV, was presented in Turin in 1963. The production model derived from it was the 350 GT, which was shown a year later at the Geneva Motor Show. The slender, elegant and sporty body with its large window surfaces was designed by Franco Scaglione. The bodywork was built by Touring of Milan using the Superleggera method (extremely light): aluminum panels mounted directly on a tubular chassis. Thanks to its 3.5 liter twelve cylinder engine with four overhead camshafts, developed by former Ferrari engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, the car could reach a top speed of 240 km/h. Only 120 examples of the Lamborghini 350 GT were built, and this one was delivered to the English collector C.W.P. Hampton. He compared the Lamborghini with his contemporary Ferraris and concluded that the Lamborghini was at least as good as, if not better than, the Ferrari.
