This Citroen 2CV, also known as the Ugly Duckling, has two engines and four wheel drive. The rear engine, placed in the luggage compartment, is mounted back to front and the gearboxes are linked together with rods. One of the engines can be switched off, for example to save fuel. This Sahara model, introduced in 1958, was intended for expeditions in the French colonies, where four wheel drive was essential. Since Citroen did not have an engine powerful enough for four wheel drive, they opted for two coupled engines. Despite a displacement of only 425 cc per engine, its off road performance is quite good. Production remained limited to 694 units, as the car was not intended for general use. Outside the colonies, the Sahara was widely used in Spain and by the Swiss postal services; reportedly, even two Sahara Ducks were used by Rijkswaterstaat. As far as is known, only about 25 examples survive worldwide.
