Corbin Sparrow Electric Single-seater
2000
'Jelly bean' is another name for the Corbin Sparrow, after a colorful, bean-shaped candy that is especially well known in Anglophone countries.
'Jelly bean' is what the Corbin Sparrow is sometimes called, after a colorful, bean-shaped candy that is especially well known in English-speaking countries. Officially it is called the PTM, Personal Transportation Module. It is a fully electric three-wheeled car, really more of an enclosed motorcycle. In America this vehicle can be driven with a motorcycle license. The door of this single-seater is on the right-hand side. The Sparrow has a low center of gravity, so it is quite stable. The lightweight body is made of very strong composite material. The vehicle was designed specifically for commuting: it has a range of about 55 kilometers, and in the United States it is allowed to use the carpool lane during rush hour. The Sparrow is capable of reaching a speed of 120 km/h. Designer Mike Corbin is no stranger to the world of motorcycles or to electric vehicles. As early as 1974 he broke the world speed record for electrically powered vehicles with an average speed of 165.367 miles per hour, about 265 km/h. The record would stand until 2009.
