The cartoon character 'Road Runner' is proudly displayed on the spoiler of this 'muscle car', the American term for relatively inexpensive production cars equipped with large engines to deliver enormous performance. This Superbird, with its 7.0 liter engine, aerodynamic nose and immense rear spoiler (factory fitted), is a technically improved version of the Plymouth Road Runner. The car was specially developed for American NASCAR races (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). Today the Superbird is seen as an iconic car, but in its own time it was not a great success; for many people the design was a bit too extreme, and the American public was also becoming more safety conscious. Many of the nearly 2,000 examples produced remained unsold at dealerships, and some of them were even 'converted back' into regular Road Runners. The 1973 oil crisis marked the definitive end of the 'muscle cars'.
