Features of old Mercedes sedans are immediately recognizable in this Chinese Shanghai SH760. In the roofline and in the doors you can see the Mercedes-Benz ponton model from the 1950s. Yet this Chinese sedan dates from the mid-1980s. This example came directly from the factory to the Louwman Museum. It has zero kilometers on the odometer and the factory plastic is still over the upholstery. The Shanghai car factory was founded in 1958 and closed its doors in 1991. The Shanghai SH760 model, with a six-cylinder inline engine also derived from an old Mercedes, was used in China mainly as a taxi or as a service car for the less important leading figures of the Communist Party. After this, Shanghai started assembling Volkswagen models, including the popular Shanghai Santana.
