Extended: Car & Film afternoons at Louwman Museum
October 31, 2013
Especially for enthusiasts of both classic films and cars, Film Atelier Den Haag and the Louwman Museum are offering a unique program this coming autumn that will appeal to both film and car lovers.
A lecture by Elisa Mutsaers (Film Atelier Den Haag) vividly illustrates, in words and images, the close relationship between cars and films. This is followed by a customized tour past those cars in the museum that are connected to the films discussed and to other films.

The program starts at 1:00 PM and runs until about 4:00 PM.
After the guided tour, there is still time until closing time (5:00 p.m.) to view the other cars or the museum's beautiful collection of car advertising posters and paintings. You can also stay to chat over a drink on the pleasant Museum Square.
The film and automobile industries are both roughly the same age. With forerunners such as the magic lantern and the carriage, film and the automobile were truly born at the end of the 19th century. They grew up together and developed from the darlings of a few highly driven inventors into large, modern industries that are constantly renewing themselves. With America as their homeland, but with cousins, uncles and aunts all over the world. Not least in European countries such as Italy, Germany, France and Great Britain. Hollywood became the cradle of the film industry and Detroit became its counterpart for the automobile industry. Film stars and cars turned out to be a golden combination, both for the slick marketing guys and for the creative minds within both industries.
Cars and films are two broad themes that evoke a personal memory or feeling in almost everyone. It is striking that fans of classic films are often also fans of classic cars. This makes the program a particularly fascinating outing that will appeal to many.
