Germain Automobiles

Automobiles Germain

Lithograph on paper Hendrick Cassiers was a prominent landscape painter. He studied in Belgium, lived in Brussels and often traveled to the Netherlands to create his best work. Cassiers, widely known for his maritime and landscape art, illustrated a number of books and held major exhibitions in Brussels, London, Paris and in his birthplace Antwerp. No other works by him are known in which a car appears. The original artwork for this print was commissioned by Automobiles Germain in Monceau-sur-Sambre and was used for advertising purposes from 1902 to 1904. The lithograph was printed in Liege by Benard; at that time Cassiers lived in Liege. Incidentally, he rarely accepted commercial commissions. The print was copyrighted and distributed in Brussels by W.J. van Marken in 1902.
