Horse Power & Horsepower
ca 1910
E. Celos was a painter and illustrator. He designed several automobile and bicycle posters at the turn of the century. Celos frequently added Art Nouveau touches to his designs and had a cartoonish charm in his work. The days of horse power are coming to an end and the days of horsepower are here to stay. The exhausted horse with its carriage and the agitated carriage driver are more than annoyed by the onslaught of modern day traffic. Automobiles and buses with considerable more horsepower are taking over the streets and the horse drawn carriage seems no longer able to compete. Even a bicycle seems better adapt to the traffic than the horse. Celos clearly emphasis the plight of the horse drawn carriage and its driver by illustrating them in colour whilst the flood of modern day traffic is merely drawn into the background void of colour. This is almost an ode to the end of the era of horse drawn carriages.
