Oakland was an American automobile brand that was produced between 1907 and 1909 by the Oakland Motor Car Company in Pontiac, Michigan. The company was founded by Edward Murphy but was soon acquired by General Motors after Murphy’s untimely death. The artist has positioned the Oakland automobile in an idyllic country setting. A family is out on a day trip and the father, mother and youngest member of the family look on as their daughter and sister plays with a butterfly in a field of flowers. Automobiles offer families a new found freedom and both interact harmoniously with nature.
