What are they waiting for?

Qu’attendent-ils?

Lithograph on paper "Misti," the pseudonym of Ferdinand Mifliez, was trained as an industrial designer and in 1890 he started working as a lithographer at Cheret's Chaix printing house. Misti's work was often shown at the Salon des Artistes Francais. Regarded as one of the best artists of his time, Misti was mainly known for his explicit and direct style. His powerful use of line and color and his dislike of unnecessary ornamentation inspired many young artists. This is the first poster of a cinematic triptych. In this poster we see an overstressed policeman trying to impose order on a crowd of waiting people. The question is "What are they waiting for?" ("Quattendent-ils?"). The steepness of the road is emphasized by the presence of a "Chevaux de Renfort" sign along the road. Literally a warning that extra horses are needed to help a carriage up the steep road. The little village along the road is called "Mistiville". Printer R. Carvin, 42, R.S. Merri, Paris Printing error: Carvim
