
Washington Street in Boston
Watercolor on paper William Ladd Taylor, born in Massachusetts, studied in Boston and New York. In 1884 he went to Paris to study with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger. He returned to the United States and during his career created outstanding illustrations and paintings for books. Taylor made this painting for publication in the series The Century in New England by the Curtis Publishing Company. The scene shows a stately lady boarding an electric city carriage on Washington Street while people look toward Newspaper Row and the Old South Church.
