X. Internationales Klausenrennen 1934
Lithograph on paper Ernst Friedrich Schonholzer was a Swiss Impressionist and Modern artist who was inspired by the 1930s. The political ideologies of Socialism, Capitalism, Communism and Fascism were at war with one another, and Surrealism and Magical Realism were prominent in the arts. The International Klausenpass race was held a total of ten times between 1922 and 1934. The 21.5 kilometer course was at the time the best known and toughest mountain race in Europe and ran from the village of Linthal (Canton of Glarus) to the Klausen Pass (Canton of Uri). In 1934 the track record of the race was held by Rudolf Caracciola and his Mercedes-Benz W 25 with a time of 15:22.2 minutes and an average speed of 83.9 km/h. Schonholzer succeeded in vividly capturing the speed and dynamism of the race in his poster. Printer J.C. Muller, Zurich 8
