The most exclusive model in Chryslers 1936 lineup. This C8 Airstream DeLuxe Town Car, with its understated yet aerodynamically styled LeBaron bodywork, costs no less than 5,000 dollars. Compare that with the price of the Chrysler C8 DeLuxe Business Coupe: 925 dollars. The body features modern, aerodynamic elements such as the teardrop shaped headlights and the rounded grille, but the Town Car concept itself is fairly conservative. The driver sits outside, but in bad weather can be protected by a small roll back roof located above the passenger compartment. A slightly more conservative body style was deliberately chosen as a counterbalance to the Chrysler Airflow, which Americans considered too progressive, and which at that time was selling poorly. The C8 Airstream is powered by a 4.5 liter inline eight cylinder engine. Of the only eight Chrysler C8s bodied by LeBaron, this is probably the last surviving example. Only twelve years after its founding, Chrysler was, in 1936, the largest car manufacturer after Ford. A remarkable achievement. That year Chrysler also reached a peak in sales, thanks in part to this Airstream model.
