Even in 1923 people were already making jokes about the name LSD, although at that time it did not yet immediately evoke the association the abbreviation has now. The three letters on their own also formed the shortened way of writing the three most important British coins of that era: pound, shilling and penny. The factory used this in its advertising to suggest that you were getting value for money. The public, however, said they would not spend a single one of those coins on such an unattractive car. The LSD was not a success. In reality the initials stood for Longbottom, Sykes and Dyson, partners of manufacturer Sykes & Sugden in Yorkshire, England. With its JAP V twin motorcycle engine and independent front wheel suspension, the LSD tried to compete with the Morgan, but failed because the Morgan simply offered better quality.
