Partly because of its airplane like appearance, this is one of the best known bubble cars. Still, getting in and out through the tilting canopy is difficult. On top of that, the turning circle is enormous. Around 1952, aircraft engineer Fritz Fend develops a three wheeled invalid car with a small Sachs engine in the back, which is soon embraced as cheap transport. Fend finds in Willy Messerschmitt a business partner who can produce the car in large numbers. Messerschmitt, during the Second World War the most successful designer of fighter aircraft for the Luftwaffe, was banned from aircraft production immediately after the war and then made sewing machines and car parts. When the ban is lifted in 1956, Fend takes over the car division and is allowed to keep using the Messerschmitt name. The cars are built until 1962.
