Moon Type 6-48
A radiator or hood ornament like the crescent moon on this Moon would be strictly forbidden today because of the risk of injury in a collision, but in 1922 that was not yet taken into account.
Like so many American car manufacturers, Moon Motor Car Co. from St. Louis, Missouri started in 1905 with the production of so called buggies, a simple carriage. This evolved into the first car, designed by Louis P. Mooers, who came from Peerless. Moon automobiles were good, solid cars, initially fitted with four cylinder Continental engines. This engine brand was used by Moon for many years to power its cars. Many smaller American makes also used this powertrain. Later they switched to six cylinder inline engines with a capacity of 3.6 liters, of which the model on display is an example. Characteristic of the Moon brand are the solid wheels that give the car a distinctive appearance. The radiator shows a strong resemblance to that of a Rolls Royce, perhaps an indication of the cars supposed quality. Later they also produced eight cylinder models, but the economic climate was not favorable and it was decided to merge with New Era Motors Inc, the producer of Kissel and Ruxton. The merger failed and all three brands disappeared. Louwman and Parqui were at the time the importer of the Moon brand in the Netherlands.
