Studebaker Champion Regal Deluxe Starlight Coupe
"Which side is the front?" people wondered when the new Studebaker Champion was unveiled in 1950.
"Which side is the front?" people wonder when the new Studebaker Champion is unveiled in 1950. The rather futuristic design is by Raymond Loewy and, compared to its predecessor, shows a radical change to the front end, which now earns the nickname "bullet nose" and features many details inspired by aviation. Also note the panoramic rear window, which is divided into sections because at that time such a window still cannot be manufactured in a single piece. Raymond Loewy (1893-1986), born in Paris, is one of the greatest industrial designers of the twentieth century. In 1919 he emigrates to New York and is struck by the gap between the high quality of American products and their poor design. In 1929 he starts his own design firm. He is responsible, among other things, for the restyling of the Coke bottle and the logo of the Lucky Strike cigarette brand, as well as for the design of the Frigidaire refrigerator, the Dutch Sprinter trainset and the first interior of the Concorde. In the 1950s and 1960s Loewy is head of design at Studebaker, for which he designs, among others, the Champion, the Hawk and the Avanti.
