David Hockney
David Hockney was born in England in 1937 and has been one of the most flamboyant and influential protagonists on the international art scene since the early 1960s. He completed his studies at the Royal College of Art in London in 1962 and soon belonged to the elite circles of swinging London. With his work he developed a completely unique form of international pop art and gained great popularity. The subject of his work are people and their surroundings. His images of the sun, swimming pools, palm trees and blue skies are particularly well-known.
A unique perception
BMW gave me a model of the car and I looked at it over and over again,” says David Hockney about the process of creating the Art Car. In the end, it seemed like a good idea to show the car as if you could look inside it. Hockney literally turned the car inside out and made it transparent through a unique perception. The bonnet has a stylised reproduction
of the engine intake manifold, the driver is visible through the door and a dachshund sits on the back seat. Details from an abstract landscape make this sensual driving experience tangible.
