FINE ART ON WHEELS

Jeff Koons – BMW M3 GT2

"THE CAR IS BURSTING WITH ENERGY. IT’S LIKE IT’S SAYING, COME ON, LET’S GO!”

JEFF KOONS

Jeff Koons

Born in 1955 in York, Pennsylvania, Jeff Koons has consistently pushed the boundaries of contemporary art. He studied at the Maryland Institute of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before gaining international acclaim for his larger-than-life sculptures, including his iconic balloon animals and reflective stainless steel pieces. His work celebrates pop culture, consumerism and fun, often challenging traditional perceptions of high and low art.

Merging Art and Motorsports

A contemporary art icon known for his larger-than-life sculptures and vibrant aesthetic, Jeff Koons was the visionary behind the 2010 BMW M3 GT2 Art Car. Inspired by speed, power and the thrill of racing, Koons wanted to capture the intensity of competition with an explosion of color and dynamic stripes. The result is a powerful racing machine that looks like it’s moving even when it’s standing still. “These race cars are like life itself – they’re powerful and have tremendous energy,” Koons explained. His design uses vibrant stripes of color to represent the car’s dynamic movement, symbolizing bursts of energy as it races around the track. The overlapping lines and vibrant colors evoke a sense of excitement, making the BMW M3 GT2 a true fusion of art and motorsport.

Le Mans race debut

The Jeff Koons BMW M3 GT2 made its race debut at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans, wearing number 79 as a tribute to Warhol’s 1979 BMW Art Car. The car, driven by Dirk Müller, Andy Priaulx and Dirk Werner, unfortunately did not finish the race, but its artistic significance remains unparalleled.
