Louwman Museum presents the exhibition 'Fine Art on Wheels' this summer
From 4 July through 31 August, the Louwman Museum will showcase a spectacular selection of eight BMW Art Cars in The Hague. Since 1975, world famous artists have been transforming new BMWs into moving works of art that reflect the evolution of art, design and technology. The cars, turned into artworks using a wide range of graphic and artistic techniques, are as diverse as the artists themselves.
This year marks exactly 50 years since the American sculptor Alexander Calder transformed a BMW 3.0 CSL into a work of art. This very car even competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In honor of this anniversary, the BMW Art Cars collection is embarking on a world tour across five continents.
The collection now consists of twenty pieces. The Louwman Museum selected eight iconic models from these, ranging from the very first Art Car to works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jeff Koons.
- Alexander Calder (1975) - BMW 3.0 CSL
- Frank Stella (1976) - BMW 3.0 CSL
- Roy Lichtenstein (1977) - BMW 320i Group 5 racing version
- Andy Warhol (1979) - BMW M1
- Cesar Manrique (1990) - BMW 730i
- Esther Mahlangu (1991) - BMW 525i
- David Hockney (1995) - BMW 850 CSi
- Jeff Koons (2010) - BMW M3 GT2
The exhibition gives visitors the chance to view the stunning details of these cars up close and discover the stories behind their designs. Thanks to the collaboration with the BMW Group, this unique exhibition has been made possible. Due to the expected crowds, the museum will be open seven days a week during the exhibition.
