The Fine

La Contravention

Lithograph on paper Fernand Fernel (also known as F. Cerckel and Ferdinand Fernandez) was a Belgian Art Nouveau painter, cartoonist, illustrator and poster artist whose favorite themes were automobiles, aviation, sport and the circus. He is known as one of the pioneers of Belgian poster art and he collaborated with the most renowned printing houses in Paris, Devambez, Chaix, Vercasson, Cerf and Lemercier. Here Fernel shows The Traffic Fine (La Contravention). A couple races ahead at high speed while a police officer tries to write a traffic ticket for speeding. But the officer is on a bicycle and struggles to keep up with the couple in the automobile. The lady in the back of the car notices this and sticks out her tongue at the officer. Dietrich & Co.
