Lady in Brown

Lady in Brown

Lady in Brown is a charming rendition of a young lady dressed in a brown coat, which has a leather like quality to it, and a bonnet. It is clearly quite cold as she has a fur muff to warm her hands and the scarf of her bonnet is being lifted by the wind. She seems to be sitting on a grassy knoll, possibly resting during a country walk or automobile drive. The suggestion of being on a drive seems to be emphasized by the leather, fashionable and practical brown driving coat that she is wearing. We are immediately drawn to her warm eyes and appealing complexion. Even though the colours surrounding her are quite grey, brown and cold, her face lights up the painting. Her intimate gaze would seem to suggest that she knew the artist and felt completely at ease staring at him or her. The painting has been signed by the artist but the artist yet to be identified.
